Event aims
This training session will support you to make sure your group or organisation is prepared to involve and welcome volunteers. We will explore examples of good practice in volunteer management and how execute this in your context.
This session is the first in a series of four volunteer management training sessions, together they provide the best practice in volunteer management:
- Volunteer Management Session 2 – Recruiting and Welcoming Volunteers
- Volunteer Management Session 3 – Supporting and Celebrating Volunteers
- Volunteer Management Session 4 – Tackling Common Problems
Who should attend?
This training is suitable for organisations and groups thinking of involving volunteers for the first time or seeking to refresh their knowledge of good practice in volunteer management.
What will you learn?
Today you will learn
- What makes a volunteer different from other types of workers
- What motivates people to volunteer
- What laws apply to volunteers and how this might affect your organisation
- Why it is important to consider the capacity of your organisation to involve volunteers before you begin recruitment
Following the session, you will be able to
- Write an ‘involving volunteers’ plan or policy
- Hold an informed discussion about how volunteers will fit into your group’s structure and mission
- Understand how you’ll make your organisation appealing to volunteers
- Plan how your organisation will manage and support volunteers

A step by step plan and the resources to write your own ‘involving volunteers’ policy, including templates, best practise examples and links to further information.
About the trainer
The Volunteer Management training will be delivered by Leah Furniss and Lizzie Clapham. Both Leah and Lizzie have extensive experience in supporting groups with best practice in volunteer management. Lizzie and Leah run our Volunteer Coordinators Network.

Refunds
Attendees can receive refunds for cancellations up to 7 days before the event date.
Cost
This event is free to organisations in North Yorkshire with an income of up to £5k thanks to funding from North Yorkshire County Council.
Places for other organisations are £18 (incl. VAT) for this session only. A discounted price of £55 (incl. VAT) for booking a place on all four sessions.
