A Community First Yorkshire event

North Yorkshire Reuse Network

The North Yorkshire Reuse network is for VCSE organisations in North Yorkshire, involved with the reuse and repurposing of items, to come together to share ideas and discuss relevant topics around the theme of reducing waste.

This time around we’ll be discovering what happens to our rubbish – and how it’s powering homes! Join us for a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of Allerton Waste Management Park, where you’ll see first-hand how household waste is transformed into valuable resources — and how landfill is being dramatically reduced.

What will you learn?

During your visit, you’ll:

  • explore how everyday rubbish is sorted, treated, and reused
  • learn how renewable energy is generated from waste
  • discover cutting-edge recycling and sustainability techniques.

Through a powerful combination of three innovative technologies, the site is able to divert over 90% of household waste from landfill:

  • Mechanical Treatment – separates out metals and plastics from general waste for recycling
  • Anaerobic Digestion – processes organic waste to produce biogas, which is used to generate green electricity
  • Energy-from-Waste – burns the remaining waste to create steam, powering a turbine that generates enough electricity for around 66,000 homes.

This is a unique opportunity to see how technology and sustainability go hand in hand to reduce our environmental footprint and create a cleaner future.

Who should attend?

This event is for members of VCSE organisations in North Yorkshire, involved with reuse and repurposing to reduce waste.
