Safeguarding essentials: what you need to know

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and this session will provide an essential overview of safeguarding principles, ensuring participants understand their role in recognising, responding to, and reporting safeguarding concerns. The training will cover:

  • Key safeguarding responsibilities for volunteers, trustees and staff members
  • How to identify signs of abuse and neglect
  • Effective ways to respond to disclosures and concerns
  • The process for reporting concerns, including local procedures and key contacts
  • Signposting to further training and resources.

What will you learn?

You will leave with a clearer understanding of safeguarding, be more confident in taking appropriate action when concerns arise and know where to access further support and guidance. By the end of the course, you will have:

  • Increased awareness of safeguarding responsibilities
  • Ability to recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns
  • Improved understanding of reporting pathways and procedures
  • Practical tools and guidance for safeguarding in different settings.

Who should attend?

This workshop is designed for anyone working or volunteering in the VCSE sector who requires some basic knowledge and understanding of safeguarding. If you want an essential overview of safeguarding principles, to know how to recognise, respond to and report safeguarding concerns, then this is the workshop for you!

Please note this training is aimed at voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations and groups based in North Yorkshire or delivering services within North Yorkshire.

What's included?

The course includes refreshments and there will be plenty of opportunity to discuss different scenarios to help you apply what you’ve learned to real-life situations.

This session aligns with North Yorkshire’s Safeguarding priorities and will include relevant local case studies and referral pathways.

Attendees will receive a safeguarding quick-reference guide and signposting to further training opportunities.

About the trainer

This training will be delivered by Andy Shield and Hilary Ashton. Andy and Hilary have many years’ experience of working with charitable groups and community organisations across North Yorkshire.

Concessionary places 
Thanks to funding from North Yorkshire County Council, we have free ‘first come, first served’ places if you meet either of the criteria below. You can self-select a free place during booking.

Criteria: 
You are from a North Yorkshire VCSE organisation with an income of up to £5k OR You are from a North Yorkshire VCSE organisation with an income of up to £25k that is experiencing financial hardship and would struggle to pay.

These spaces are limited so if a free place is not shown when you go to book, you can ask to be added to the waiting list for a free place on a future training session.

Refunds

Attendees can receive refunds for cancellations up to 7 days before the event date.
