Writing case studies

“Once upon a time…”

It’s the classic start to a story – one that makes us lean in and get ready to listen.

There was a time when being a charity or community group was story enough. But today, with growing competition for funding, volunteers and support, being able to connect with people on an emotional level has never been more important.

That’s where your case studies come in. They’re not just reports – they’re powerful tools for sharing the real difference your work makes.

Writing them well isn’t always easy, but this training will give you practical tips and techniques to help you transform everyday examples into storytelling gold.

We’re delighted to be working once again with the Royal Literary Fund, bringing you a course designed especially for the VCSE sector – focused on helping you tell stories that inspire, engage and make an impact.

What will you learn?

A good case study doesn’t just share facts – it tells a story. It’s a structured way of exploring ideas, explaining situations, showing progress, and celebrating the difference your organisation makes for people and communities.

Case studies are also powerful tools for marketing, fundraising and research.

In this online workshop, you’ll learn how to:

  • Understand the key building blocks of a strong case study – from introduction and context through to outcomes and impact
  • Structure your case studies so they flow and make sense to different audiences
  • Adapt tone and style to connect with funders, stakeholders, families and the wider community
  • Use storytelling techniques to bring your examples to life and make them more engaging
  • Edit and proofread your work so it’s clear, professional and compelling

Who should attend?

This training will suit anyone needing to craft case studies as part of their employment or volunteering role. If you want to take your creative writing abilities to the next level to engage with potential funders, volunteers and partners, this session will help you put a persuasive ‘pen to paper’ to tell your organisation’s story.

Please note this training is aimed at voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations and groups based in North Yorkshire or delivering services within North Yorkshire.
