Woodworking workshop safety awareness training for men’s sheds

man at woodworking class

Wood working presents potential risks – some are obvious others are more hidden.

It is the responsibility of everyone in a shed to make sure people are kept safe and there are no accidents and risks are mitigated.

This course will demonstrate what good practice looks like, provide examples of suggested paperwork and notices and highlight workshop dangers and encourage safe working.

Examples and use of appropriate PPE will be demonstrated along with the safe use of equipment such as a table saw, chop saw, planer thicknesser, band saw and drilling. There will be the chance to try the equipment while making an item from wood to take home. Ratios will be one to six people to maintain safety standards.

What will you learn?

This course will help to develop your awareness of key aspects of health and safety that should be in place in Men’s Sheds to help protect your members, volunteers and visitors. A range of essential HSE guidance publications will be referred to during the theoretical aspect of the course and areas such as H&S policies, induction and training records, risk assessment including lone working, management of COSHH substances, safety signage, maintenance and local exhaust ventilation (LEV) will be discussed.

Less obvious ‘hidden’ hazards relevant to a range of wood working machinery will also be covered including noise, dust, hand-arm vibration (HAVS), lighting and thermal comfort. Attendees will then be able to select the correct level of personal protective equipment (PPE) for use with fixed machinery and portable power tools, and when cleaning/emptying LEV units. During the practical aspect of the course all essential safe set-up and pre-operational checks for table saws, chop saws, planer thicknessers, band saws and drilling machines will be demonstrated by the trainer in detail.

This will help to develop an understanding of the main hazards and causes of injuries specific to each piece of equipment covered, and how the correct positioning of guards, fences and the use of push sticks/blocks significantly reduces the likelihood of such accidents occurring. When using the equipment attendees will be observed to confirm their understanding of the correct safe-operating procedures demonstrated, including leaving machinery in a safe condition.

Following the course attendees will receive digital copies of all the essential publications referred to during the training, along with example editable safe operational procedures for the specific machines covered.
